Administration officials disclosed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers announced that members at the Education Department would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the actions in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, military personnel, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Previously, labor groups sought a temporary restraining order to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Moreover, a court official ordered the administration to provide specifics on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute layoffs.

An analysis argued that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to carry out firings, citing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier stated. The flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the funding gap.
