Each time a significant honors show draws close, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of followers with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
