The McLaren driver edged out team-mate and title rival the Australian for the fastest time in the dying seconds of practice at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the title advantage from his teammate by just one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Piastri had been the leading McLaren throughout the hour before sprint qualifying set to begin at 18:30 GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in the points battle, sitting 36 points behind behind Norris, finished in P17 as his team followed a unique setup. His teammate the Japanese driver was the only driver to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at corner four early in the session. The Japanese spun out over the curbs on exit before rotating through the run-off area, and was fortunate to escape with just a slight brush of the fence. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also spun, at the conclusion of the practice, turning around through the high-speed corner before the final bend on to the main straight. The seven-time champion finished practice in P19, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the other competitors, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber P3, over half a second behind the Australian's time. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto fifth from Mercedes' Russell and the Alpine of Pierre Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
